HILARIE BURTON: There really wasn't a lot of turmoil. It was a fabulous six-year run, which is how long my contract was for, and I feel really lucky to have been a part of the show. So when I hear that there's turmoil or negotiations based on money it kind of hurts my feelings, because it's not what's been going on at all. I think my fan base in particular knows that money isn't necessarily a big motivator for me, that's why I work in the world of independent film.
How long have you known that you were leaving?
BURTON: I've known for a little while. For me, it was definitely an emotional decision. And a professional decision as well. I got really, really lucky. One Tree Hill was my very first television audition; it was a fairytale. I feel really lucky to have that level of success right out of the gate.
Just so I'm clear, it was your decision to leave, not the other way around?
BURTON: I think everyone was kind of agreeable about the situation. There were a lot of really wonderful conversations. It wasn't a rash decision; a lot of thought, emotion, and kindness was put into it. I would hope that that's the story that gets out -- that it was a bunch of adults being good to each other and being kind about the decision-making process.
Did The Powers That Be make a concerted effort to get you to re-sign?
BURTON: The conversations that they had with me were very compassionate and very sweet. They told me that they valued me, and that meant a lot. And they also wanted me to be happy and challenged and excited. There was some confusion for a little bit as to what was going on, but I think everybody's in a good place now.
Talk to me about the video message you made for your fans back in February. It seemed like you were maybe saying good-bye. What point were you trying to get across?
BURTON: The purpose of that video was to dispel the rumors that were being circulated. I was on your end of it for a very long time when I worked at MTV, and I understand how the rumor mill works. Everybody wants a sensational story. People even back then were blaming it on money, and [on me] being high maintenance… Those rumors were really hurtful. Of anybody on the show, I was the one who was very excited about doing all the extracurricular stuff -- the mall tours, the radio tours, going to the upfronts… I loved my involvement with this show, and I really just wanted my fan base to know that I wasn't turning my nose up at this wonderful opportunity I've had for the last six years. There's an ugly trend where actors think they've surpassed the show that made them or the film that made them and badmouth it. I will never say a bad word about One Tree Hill. The entire shape of my world changed because of that show, so I'll always be very affectionate toward it.
Have you spoken to Chad recently?
BURTON: I was in L.A. last week and we talked. Chad and I are good friends. I won't speak for him, but it was not a rash decision on either of our parts. He's very compassionate toward the show and the fans. It's not an easy decision, but we've got to be grown-ups sometimes. [CMM's rep declined my interview request, saying, "Chad is no longer on the show and has no comment regarding the new season."]
What was your last day on the set like?
BURTON: We wrapped together. We were the last two in the last scene, and we opened up a tab across the street for our crew to say thank you and cried a bunch.
Lucas and Peyton don't really get an official sendoff next week. Is that disappointing?
BURTON: It's like when you leave for college but you know your parents still have your bedroom set up. You never know if you're going to have to come home... I got really lucky with my character; I got a full-circle story. It was, "Lucas and Peyton: Are they going to be together? Are they not going to be together?" And as we saw in this week's episode, my character got everything she ever wanted.
Might you make the occasional guest appearance?
BURTON: Never say never. They didn't kill us. There's nothing vengeful about it, and I think that's because as much as we love them, they love us back.
What are you going to do now?
BURTON: One Tree Hill was a great learning opportunity for me, and I'm excited to go and apply that elsewhere and see where I end up. I'm hoping the fans support whatever my next endeavor is. I'm actually curious what they want me to do... On the blog that I have for my production company, we're producing a web series that we're going to start shooting on Memorial Day. We've also got a television show that we're turning into a graphic novel, and we've got a film we're raising money for. I'm busy. And I'm keeping my business down in North Carolina. I'm still going to be in the neighborhood; it'll just be in a different capacity.
Last question, and it's a biggie: What happens to Peyton's record company?
BURTON: Who knows? Maybe she'll take it with her. I get to be a fan of the show now, which is cool. I get to sit back and be a fan. I'm personally very excited to see where it goes. I understand they're introducing some new characters... I have no doubt they will come up with something to reinvent the show yet again. CITAZIONE Ci sono molti pettegolezzi riguardo la tua uscita dallo show. Qual è la verita?
Non c'è stata tanta agitazione. E' stato un magnifico percorso di sei anni,che era esattamente la durata del mio contratto, e mi sono sentita veramente fortunata di far parte dello show. Quindi quando ho saputo che c'erano turbolenze riguardanti soldi, mi sono sentita in un certo senso ferita,perchè per tutto questo tempo non si è trattato di quello. Penso che i miei fan di base sappiano in particolare che non è necessariamente una grande motivazione per me, è per questo che lavoro nel mondo dei film indipendenti.
Da quando sai che avresti abbandonato?
Lo so da un po. Per me è stata esclusivamente una decisione emozionale. Al meglio una decisione professionale. Sono stata veramente,veramente fortunata!OTH è stata la mia prima audizione televisiva assoluta:era una favola.Sono veramente fortunata ad avere questo tipo di successo subito fuori il cancello.
Giusto per aver le cose chiare,è stata una tua decisione quella di abbandonare,non delle persone intorno a te?
Credo che ognuno sia stato gentile circa la situazione.Ci sono state tante conversazioni piacevoli.Non è stata una decisione avventata:tanti pensieri,emozioni e gentilezze sono stati messi all'interno.Spero che questa sia la storia che ne esce fuori-che c'era un gruppo di adulti che vanno d'accordo insieme e che hanno preso una decisione unanime per far funzionare tutto.
I produttori di hanno offerto un'ingente somma per non lasciarti andare?
Le conversazioni che hanno avuto con me sono state veramente compassionevoli e dolci. Mi hanno detto che tengono a me,e ciò ha significato molto.E inoltre mi volevano vedere felice cambiata ed eccitata.C'è stato un piccolo momento di confusione per quanto stesse accadendo,ma penso che ora ognuno sia al suo posto.
Parlami del video che hai lasciato a febbraio per i tuoi fan.Parlavi che forse avresti lasciato.A che punto volevi arrivare?
Lo scopo di quel video era quello di disperdere i pettegolezzi che si erano sparsi in quel periodo.Lavorando ad MTV ho capito quanto possano essere veloci ed efficaci i pettegolezzi.Le persone volevano una storia sensazionale.Nessuno avrebbe pensato si trattasse di soldi...Quei pettegolezzi mi hanno ferita molto.Fra tutti quelli dello show io ero quella veramente eccitata di fare le attività extracurriculari-il tour degli spettacoli nei centrocommerciali,il tour delle radio..ho amatoil mio coinvolgimento in questo show, e voglio solo dire ai miei veri fan che non ho torto il naso a questa magnifica opportunità in questi sei anni.C'è una brutta moda che vede gli attori parlare male dei telefilm o dei film che li hanno cresciuti.Non dirò mai brutte parole su One Tree Hill.L'intero mio mondo ha cambiato forma grazie a questo telefilm,quindi ne sarò sempre affezionata!!
Hai parlato con Chad recentemente?
Ero a LA la scorsa settimana e ho parlato con lui.Chad e io siamo buoni amici.Non voglio parlare per lui,ma non è stata una decisione avventata per nessuna della due parti.E' veramente compassionevole riguardo ai fan e allo show.Non è una decisione facile,ma a volte dobbiamo crescere.[Il produttore della CMM ha decliato la mia domanda dicendo:"Chad non è raggiungibile per lo show e non ha commenti riguardo questo.]
Come è stato il tuo ultimo giorno sul set?
Abbiamo concluso tutti insieme. Noi eravamo gli ultimi due dell'ultima scena e abbiamo aperto una striscia attorno alla strada per il nostro staff per dire grazie e piangere il gruppo.

Lucas e Peyton non hanno una vera e propria uscita la prossima settimana,è una delusione?
E' come quando te ne vai per il collage ma sai che i tuoi tengono sempre la tua camera intatta..non sai mai se avrai bisogno di tornare a casa.Sono stata molto fortunata con il mio personaggio;ho avuto una storia a cerchio completo.Era:"Lucas e Peyton:staranno insieme?non staranno insieme?" E come vedremo nell'episodio di questa settimana,il mio personaggio otterrà tutto ciò che ha sempre desiderato.
Forse farai una apparizione occasionale
Mai dire mai.Non ci hanno uccisi.Non c'è niente in contrario a proposito di questo, e penso che sia perchè quanto noi amiamo loro,loro ci amano di rimando.
Cosa farai adesso?
OTH è stata una grande opportunità di insegnamento.Ed è bello pensare che andrò ad applicare questo da qualche altra parte e vedere dove andrò a finire.Spero che i fan mi sosterranno qualsiasi sarà la mia prossima avventura *oh,puoi contarci..XD*. Sono curiosa di sapere cosa loro vogliano che io faccia...Nel blog che ho con la mia produzione stiamo montando una serie web che inizieremo a girare nel giorno del ringraziamento. Abbiamo anche uno spettacolo televisivo che trasporremo come graphic novel, e abbiamo un film per cui stiamo raccogliendo fondi.Sono occupata. E continuerò a essere impegnata in Nord Carolina. Sarò ancora nel vicinato;sarà solo in un altro modo..* *
Ultima domanda:Cosa accadrà alla casa discografica di Peyton?
Chi lo sa?Forse se la porterà con se. Ormai sono diventata una fan del telefilm,che è fico!Devo solo sedermi davanti alla tv e diventare una fan.Sono curiosa di vedere come andrà avanti...Sono consapevole che introdurranno altri personaggi..Non ho dubbi:se ne verranno fuori con qualcosa per reinventare lo spettacolo di nuovo!
